Fibre broadband with Gigaclear - meetings 8 & 9 September Downe & Cudham

Fibre broadband with Gigaclear
Meetings 8 & 9 September Downe & Cudham

"You may by now have received a ‘postcard’ from Gigaclear some weeks ago and I have also sent out Downe mailings on the subject.
Yesterday (24.8.15), I and a few others from Cudham and Downe had a meeting with Gigaclear where they explained more about what they can offer the villages and what they have already done in seven villages around the Sevenoaks area.
Please note that I am only passing this information on and have no connection with Gigaclear - neither have I signed up for it myself at this stage!
Gigaclear observed that if a fibre optic cable was laid throughout Downe this would give the opportunity for every household to become connected and receive ultrafast broadband either now or in the future.  You could quickly download large files, update your system, use catch up TV without any buffering etc.   Several people could use the internet at one time without any loss of speed, Skype and other communication systems would work more efficiently and you could use it for your phone service as well.  Many residents suffer poor phone lines as well as slow broadband because they are further from the BT street cabinet – that problem would disappear.
Gigaclear have organised two public meetings where they can explain exactly what is involved and there will be plenty of time for questions and answers.
In order for the project (which will cover both Cudham and Downe) to go ahead they, obviously, need a minimum number of households to contract for the service right at the start.  Equally obviously the cost of this service will probably be higher than you pay at present but it is worth finding out more about the benefits you could gain before you decide whether or not you are willing to pay the price.
As you are reading this email you obviously use the internet at present so I would encourage you to attend the meeting and find out more.  It is difficult to make a decision without ALL the necessary information.   Below are the details of two events for the villages - you would be welcome at either – the two villages would comprise one single project.
Please pass this information onto any other residents who may not be on Downe Mailing."

Your chance to shape Bromley borough's future response to mental health care

Your chance to shape Bromley borough's future response to mental health care by completing survey by 26 August 2015.

The following organisations will be under review as new contracts will be issued in 2016:
‘Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT)’
and
Bromley’s Mental Health Employment (MHE) service'

To take part in the survey, use the link:

The Detail:

"Dear Zoe Knight
I was hoping you could forward the email below to all your members at Downe Residents' Association?
We are trying to reach as a wide a cross-section of individuals in Bromley as possible and feel that your group would help us achieve this.

Yours
Claudia Demuth, for Healthwatch Bromley"
-------

'Bromley Mental Health Survey please fill in by 26 August 2015
One in six adults is known to suffer from mental ill-health caused by mild to moderate depression and a range of anxiety disorders. In Bromley, adults can get help for mental health conditions in various ways, of which two are listed here:
a) If you are aged 18 and over, you can self-refer or get your GP to refer you to ‘Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT)’ which helps people suffering from depression and a range of anxiety disorders (including panic attacks, post-traumatic stress disorder, excessive worry, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or phobias).
b) If you are struggling to find or stay in work due to your mental health problems and are aged 18+, you can self-refer to Bromley’s Mental Health Employment (MHE) service. They support people in recovery from mental health problems to find or stay in work, by offering personalised flexible services.

Both of these services – IAPT and MHE - are going to be under review as new contracts will be issued in 2016. The organisations that pay for theses service (NHS Bromley CCG and Bromley Council) want to know your views on current services provided by Improving Access to Psychological Therapies and Mental Health Employment. They also want you to help decide future local provision. We, Healthwatch Bromley and Lewisham, has been asked to run this survey with local residents to find out what you think about these services. Healthwatch Bromley gives people a powerful voice locally and nationally, by helping you to get the best out of your local health and social care services. So this covers people who use services now and those who might need to use services, in the future.

Who should fill in the survey? How can you do it?
Your opinion does and will matter. You could be a current IAPT or MHE user. You might have heard about the service informally. You might have a friend or family member who has used it. You might know someone with depression and anxiety who has not wanted to get help. Whatever your viewpoint, please consider filling this survey in, as long as you are aged 18 or over, live or work in Bromley, and want to change things for the better! You have until Wednesday 26th August 2015 to fill it in. We want to know what ‘good’ mental health support looks like for those suffering from depression and a range of anxiety disorders in Bromley, as well as those needing to find work.

Use this website link to fill in the Healthwatch Bromley and Lewisham survey: www.surveymonkey.com/r/bromleymentalhealth

Please do pass this email and link to family and friends to complete too. It will take you from 8 to 15 minutes to complete, depending on how much you have to say. The survey provides instructions on which questions to complete, to guide you. Please complete the survey as thoroughly and honestly as possible. You can skip sections that do not apply to you.  If you prefer to attend a focus group, there is one being held at Beckenham Beacon on the 26th August 2015 - you can attend the morning 10-12pm or the afternoon 2-4pm.  Please email for more info.

What happens next? I have more questions….
All the information you provide is secure and anonymous (If you provide any contact details these will be separated from survey results). All responses will come back directly to HWBL to be collated, analysed and put into a report for NHS Bromley CCG. You can ask for a copy of this at the survey end. Lastly, when you reach the end of the survey, you will find information listed on local and national support for people struggling with depression or anxiety disorders

If you want to call someone to discuss this survey or get someone to ask you the questions by phone, please email comment@healthwatchbromley.co.uk or leave a message on 07511 774613.
If you have questions about broader issues raised by this survey, please call HWBL on 020 8315 1916.

Many thanks
Claudia Demuth

The R8 bus route will be unaffected. The 146 bus will not serve Downe but will provide a service to/from Leaves Green Road.

Access will be provided as best as possible to residents from either side of closure but is closed to through traffic. The operatives will be starting at the North End Lane junction end of Rookery Road first and working their way up towards the junction of New Road Hill, therefore access will be provided via the New Road Hill end of Rookery Road at the beginning of the day and will reverse to the other end as the workmen work their way up Rookery Road. Please be aware that there may be delays for residents who are trying to gain access.

The R8 bus route will be on diversion during this closure and will not serve any of North End Lane whilst the closure is in place.

The closure will be between the junctions of Rookery Road and Mill Lane, starting at the Rookery Road junction, with the workmen then working their way up towards Mill Lane. Once again access will be provided as best as possible to residents either side of the closure but is closed to through traffic. Please be aware that there may be delays for residents who are trying to gain access.

Luxted Road closed on Thursday 27 August 2025 between 0930 and 1530

Traffic will be diverted via Rookery Road, New Road Hill, Downe Road, Leaves Green Road, Main Road, Jail Lane, Single Street. The closure will be in place between 0930-1530, although works may finish sooner and road re-opened earlier. The R8 bus route will be on diversion during this closure and will not serve any of Luxted Road, Single Street or Jail Lane. It will be diverted via Leaves Green Road and will then serve Downe Village before resuming its usual route and serving North End Lane like usual.

Access will be provided as best as possible to residents from either side of closure but is closed to through traffic. The operatives will be starting at the Single Street end of Luxted Road and working their way up towards Downe’s High Street. Please be aware that there may be delays for residents who are trying to gain access."

Downe defibrillator update

Last week a number of villagers took up the offer of defibrillator training in the Village Hall. The evening was very successful and Paul Pearson of the London Ambulance Service, included first aid training as well as defib training in the session. The next session is on 15 September again in the Village Hall starting at 7.30 p.m. All places must be pre-booked as there is a limit on the number that can be accommodated in one session. We have one or two places left and these can be booked on downdefib@btinternet.com or 01959-573157

We are still fundraising for the defibrillator and should you wish to donate please pick up a Gift Aid envelope from St Mary’s, Downe, and mark it ‘defib’ and pop it in the Church box. You must complete name and address in order that Gift Aid can be claimed. (Please do not leave cash in the box.)

We have been very lucky, along with Holwood Farm shop, to make the front page of this week’s Biggin Hill News. The piece in entitled ‘New defibrillators will help save lives.’ This is very good publicity for defibrillators in general as Biggin Hill locations are also mentioned.

Superfast Broadband for Downe and Cudham - your help needed

Superfast Broadband

In brief:
-21% have registered so far- this is half the amount needed to move to the next stage
-registering shows interest not commitment at this stage, so don't worry
-to register your interest go to:

In detail:
"Many thanks to all those who have registered their interest on the Gigaclear website for having superfast broadband.

However, the current percentage of registrations for our area (Downe and Cudham) stands at 21% of households.   This is about HALF the number of registrations needed to convince Gigaclear to invest in our area !

We need a big push to get more households (not individuals - Gigaclear work on numbers of different properties) to register their interest.   If you have not already done so, please
go to:

then enter your postcode, then follow the subsequent registration instructions.
Can I just stress this company needs a significant interest from us, in order for them to move to the next stage, so it is in all our interests to get as many registrations completed as we can.

Please, please urge your friends and neighbours to register -  even if they are unsure – this is not a commitment at this stage.   Please make sure any businesses in the area are aware of this also.
I have started a question and answer dialogue on the Downe website, and intend to update this regularly.  Please go to:
As usual, if you have any other questions, please contact me at:    sj.barnes@btopenworld.com

Defibrillator Training: 4 August

Defibrillator Training
Tuesday 4 August
7.30pm
Downe Village Hall

"The first training session for the defib is on Tuesday 4 August in the Village Hall at 7.30 p.m. Can you put the following on downemailing please:

Some of you may have noticed that the defibrillator has been commissioned and installed in the porch of the Queen’s Head, Downe. We are now offering two defibrillator training sessions so that we get as many villagers trained as possible in the use of the defibrillator. The training is not onerous and learning the technique of first aid along with training for using the defibrillator in an emergency is very useful.

The first training session for the defibrillator is next Tuesday 4 August at 7.30 p.m. in the Village Hall. The training will last for approximately 90 minutes and will be carried out by Paul Pearman, Senior Paramedic/Community Resuscitation Training Officer, London Ambulance Service, and you will receive a certificate at the end of it.

We have already received a number of bookings but there are a few places left. As numbers are limited we have been asked by the London Ambulance Service to ensure all those attending are booked in so that certificates can be prepared in advance.

If you would like to attend on Tuesday or book in for the next training session on 15 September also to be held in the Village Hall at 7.30 p.m. please contact downedefib@btinternet.com or ring me on 01959 573157.
